The holidays are filled with heartwarming and festive moments making this time of year an ideal one for engagements. That way as travelers commute far and wide to be with the ones they love, they can share ‘the news’ with family and friends over the holidays.

And, as the season presents a wealth of special locations and activities…honing in on what to put on her hand becomes the question of the hour, and we just happen to be in the business to help steer you in the right direction.

Below is a quick slideshow of some of the latest engagement ring styles available this holiday season:

Serving Jacksonville for almost 40 years, our knowledgeable staff has put together the 5-core things to pay attention to when shopping for her and why:

  1. Her Ring Size
  2. The Engagement Ring Band
  3. The Four C’s
  4. The Diamond Shape
  5. Her Setting

Find Out Her Ring Size

The best way to get the correct ring size is to get a ring that she isn’t wearing and bring it to the jeweler to be measured. Make sure it’s a ring she wears on her “ring finger” preferably on the same hand. If you get the wrong size, all isn’t lost, but it will take a little time and maybe a little more money to have it properly fitted.

Pick the Engagement Ring Band

You have a variety of metals to choose from and these days mixing and matching is very popular. Yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum, and silver are the most familiar metals of choice and each one has their advantages and disadvantages. For example, platinum is an extremely durable metal and will last a very long time.

Stackable bands, pictured below, allow you to stack several different styles on the same finger along with your engagement ring. These allow you to mix and match styles and experiment with different metals and color combinations.

Currently the most popular engagement rings are “silver-looking,” and platinum and white gold bands are the most commonly sold engagement ring band today.

*Whichever band fits your partner’s style the best, rest assured knowing that every band purchased at Beard’s Jewelry is given a lifetime warranty and lifetime service that includes complimentary professional cleanings, resizing, rhodium finish and ongoing maintenance.

Selecting a Quality Diamond: The Four C’s

The focal point of most engagement rings is the diamond. Now that you have selected a band let’s talk about the “4 C’s” as they relate to determining the quality and cost of the diamond. The 4 C’s are: cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

The Cut: This does not refer to the shape of the diamond, but rather the angles and proportions of the stone. While nature determines the other three C’s, the cut, is determined by the cutter. The sparkle comes from the reflection of the light from one facet to another as light is projected through the top of the stone. The cut is the most important – even if you have the perfect color, clarity and carat, if the cut isn’t right, the diamond won’t have the fiery brilliance you are looking for.

The Color: Diamond color is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). A truly colorless diamond is the most rare and expensive. White color diamonds are the most popular, but it all boils down to preference.

The Clarity: The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the more expensive it is. You will hear the word “inclusions.” They are the minerals or tiny fractures in the diamond and the fewer of them the better. Clarity is measured on a scale. For example: SI1 and SI2 are slightly included, yet you won’t be able to see the imperfection with the naked eye.

The Carat Weight: This literally refers to the weight of the diamond. The heavier the stone, the more you will pay for it. Mounting and shaping come into play a lot here, as a master jeweler can make a diamond appear larger than its carat weight might suggest.

Choose the Diamond Shape

In addition to the four C’s, the shape you choose will matter. Here is a list of the possible shapes you can get a diamond in:

  • Round
  • Cushion
  • Oval
  • Princess
  • Emerald
  • Radiant
  • Pear
  • Asscher
  • Marquis
  • Heart

Pick Out Her Setting

Finally, it’s time to pick out the setting! A ring’s setting refers to the way in which the diamond is placed on the ring. When it comes to picking out the right setting a lot of this depends on your better half’s preference! Take the time to shop around all of the different setting choices and you can even create your own should you choose!
